Are ChatGPT-like products endangering software developer jobs? Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, had the following to say

Many people are concerned that their occupations may be eliminated by AI as a result of modern artificial intelligence applications like ChatGPT, Bard, and more. In the midst of the anxiety, Google CEO Sundar Pichai asserts that these capabilities are anticipated to increase public access to software programming tools.

Pichai discussed the worry among software developers about losing their jobs to AI in a podcast with The New York Times. I think there will be a lot of societal adaption with this one,” he said. And as a result, we might all need to change our course.

Pichai emphasised the advantages of generative AI techniques. “I believe two things will hold true for software engineers as well. One is that some of the grunt work you do for programming will get better. But maybe coding will get more pleasurable over time, just like writing has gotten easier thanks to Google Docs.

Pichai thinks that ChatGPT and tools akin to Bard will increase programming’s accessibility for more people and allow users to create new things that could eventually give rise to new roles.

He responded that he is not surprised by the popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT when asked if it surprises him. “We have been monitoring GPT 2 and GPT 3,” he said. That part didn’t surprise us because we were aware of the high calibre of the local populace. Even Bard will grow in the upcoming days, he said.

We obviously have models that are more capable, he continued. Bard will soon be upgraded to one of our more advanced Pathways Language Model (PaLM) models, which will give it more capabilities in terms of reasoning, coding, and improving its ability to respond to maths queries. Notably, India still lacks access to Google’s Bard.

Moreover, he discussed the limitations of Bard, saying, “To me, it was crucial to not put out a more capable model before we can fully ensure we can handle it well.”

Additionally, Pichai noted that the current pace of AI research is too rapid and “poses a threat to society.”
