1. GeForce RTX 4090

Some people believe that the quickest graphics card is the best, regardless of price. The GeForce RTX 4090 from Nvidia is designed specifically for this group of users. It also marks the introduction of Nvidia’s brand-new Ada Lovelace architecture, making it the company’s most powerful card—at least until the anticipated RTX 4090 Ti appears.

The RTX 4090 will have more to offer if you were dissatisfied that the RTX 3090 Ti was just marginally quicker (30%) than an RTX 3080 in most tasks. It performed on average 55% faster than the 3090 Ti throughout our regular set of gaming benchmarks. The lead increases to 78% when you launch a game with robust ray tracing effects! The 4090 is 25% quicker in games that use classic rasterization and performs just over twice as well in titles that use ray tracing, but it also costs roughly twice as much. AMD’s new RX 7900 XTX cannot compete with it.

Well to be clear about one thing: To get the most out of the RTX 4090, you actually need a high refresh rate 4K monitor. Its edge over a 3090 Ti at 1440p drops to 30%, while at 1080p, it is only 16%. When playing intensive ray tracing games at 1080p, it still outperforms AMD’s 6950 XT by more than double, despite being only 7% quicker at 1080p ultra and slightly slower at 1080p medium.

Also, it’s not only about game performance. The RTX 4090 is around 80% quicker than the RTX 3090 Ti in professional content creation workloads including Blender, Octane, and V-Ray. It is more than three times faster than the RX 7900 XTX when using Blender. And let’s not even begin to discuss duties requiring artificial intelligence. The RTX 4090 was eight times quicker than the RX 6950 XT in Stable Diffusion testing, despite the fact that it was difficult to even get things operating on AMD GPUs (we had to use Linux), and many other AI workloads presently only run on Nvidia GPUs.

If you’re solely considering rasterization games, AMD’s RDNA 3 solution to Ada Lovelace might be a better deal, but the RTX 4090 still holds the top spot in terms of sheer performance. To get the most out of the 4090, you might also wish to upgrade the CPU and power supply. At least RTX 4090 GPUs are frequently available now for close to the $1,600 launch MSRP.

2. Radeon RX 7900 XTX

With a price increase to match, AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XTX has replaced the RX 6950 XT from the previous generation at the top of the list. It had an apparent price tag of $999, but it was almost instantly sold out, so we are now forced to wait for supply to catch up to demand. The majority of the time, that is the case; over the past month, cards priced at $999 have shown frequently, with the cheapest cards currently marked up less than $100. Yet, there is a valid explanation for the demand, as the 7900 XTX is equipped with AMD’s most recent RDNA 3 architecture.

This increases the 7900 XTX’s computing power significantly, and you also receive 33% extra RAM. In our rasterization test suite and ray tracing games, the new GPU performs on average 32% and 42% quicker than the 6950 XT, respectively. Furthermore, it achieves this increase in performance without noticeably increasing power consumption or graphics processor size. Saving $100 for the inferior RX 7900 XT instead of the top-tier RX 7900 lags behind by 15% as well, therefore it is not really wise to do so.

The performance of AMD’s GPUs in professional settings can be hit or miss. With AMD technology, some SPECviewperf applications perform admirably while others struggle. It goes without saying that Nvidia’s cards are a far superior choice if you want to conduct AI or deep learning research. However, AMD’s quickest choice for this generation is the RX 7900 XTX, which undoubtedly has plenty of power. It’s also worthwhile to think about the 7900 XT if you’re prepared to compromise because it’s now more reasonably priced.

3. Radeon RX 6650 XT

Best Deal for a Graphics Card Overall

At the moment, the Navi 23 architecture is used by AMD’s mainstream GPUs. Ordinarily, we’d anticipate a 32 CU Navi 22 model, code-named the RX 6700 non-XT, but AMD reduced the number of CUs, the width of the memory interface, and the size of the Infinity Cache to provide a smaller, more affordable chip with comparable performance. (Take note that the Radeon RX 6700 is now available and has 10GB of VRAM, although it is more expensive and only slightly improves performance.))

The RX 6650 XT is an upgrade and replacement for the current RX 6600 XT, providing marginally better performance for essentially the same cost. (Because the 6600 XT is being officially discontinued, prices have started to rise.) It is impressive that performance is marginally better than the RX 5700 XT from the previous generation, given that the memory bus has been reduced from 256 bits to just 128 bits.

Nonetheless, there is legitimate cause for concern over the 8GB of VRAM, and there are undoubtedly situations where the RTX 3060 proves to be the superior option, particularly when DLSS and DXR are taken into account. Even yet, when you consider the memory bandwidth, it’s amazing how much performance can be improved by a 32MB Infinity Cache. In essence, this is a chip that is 15% smaller than Navi 10 and is constructed on the same TSMC N7 node. It also produces greater framerates at 1080p.

Yet, there are times when it falters, with ray tracing being a significant one. Many of the games we tried that supported DXR (DirectX Raytracing) couldn’t even manage 20 frames per second at 1080p. Without DLSS, Nvidia’s RTX 3060 was roughly twice as fast, and with DLSS Quality mode, it was often an additional 40% quicker. As FSR gives AMD, Nvidia, and even Intel GPUs a similar performance boost, it doesn’t truly cure that either. The RX 6650 XT and RX 6600 XT felt disappointing after the other Big Navi processors delivered tremendous levels of VRAM.

Current internet pricing, which has significantly improved things, reflects that. Despite having a $399 MSRP, the RX 6650 XT is currently on sale for $260, which is only $25 more than the RX 6600, the previous bargain champion. The RX 6650 XT looks fantastic in comparison to the RTX 3050 which has a comparable online price. AMD won’t be updating its current midrange products until later in 2023.

4. Radeon RX 6600

Avoid Ray Tracing, maintain Excellent Mainstream Performance

The 6650 XT above has several advantages, but the Radeon RX 6600 cuts those advantages down a little. In non-RT games, it lags behind the RTX 3060 by roughly 15% overall, but in our tests, it was still 30% quicker than the RTX 3050. Although we observed it selling for little over $200 for the previous few months, prices have suddenly creeped back up to $250. Hopefully, this will change.

It’s still considerably cheaper than AMD’s stated $329 Pricing, which seemed excessive at launch – not that we actually saw those prices in appreciable amounts until recently. Yet with cards already coming for far less than MSRP, this is the second-best overall value, directly behind the RX 6650 XT. This is a fantastic alternative if you don’t want the latest extreme(ly costly) GPUs from AMD and Nvidia and simply want a good standard answer.

The RX 6600 competes against the RTX 3050 as well as GPUs from the RTX 20-series and GTX 16-series generations from before. Midrange graphics cards are a competitive market. In our tests, it ultimately delivers close to RTX 2070 performance, at least in non-ray tracing circumstances. But, when ray tracing is turned on, it performs horribly, averaging only 30 frames per second at 1080p medium in our DXR test suite and falling 20% behind Nvidia’s RTX 2060.

The RX 6600 is worth considering if ray tracing is not a concern for you. The card only consumes roughly 130W, which is significantly less power than comparable GPUs, and AMD’s Infinity Cache does wonders for what would otherwise appear to be a relatively powerful GPU. RDNA 3 GPUs probably won’t hit the sub-$250 price point until mid-2023 or later; Intel’s as-yet-unreleased Arc A580 is about the only serious potential rival on the horizon right now.
